Pidgy vs Spark Mail

Spark is free, or about $5.99 a month for Premium, and it runs on Mac, iOS, Android and Windows. So the honest first question in Pidgy vs Spark Mail is a blunt one. Do you need an inbox agent at all, or just a nicer client? This page tries to answer that without pretending Spark is bad.

The short version

Spark Mail is a well-made email client from Readdle with a generous free tier, a Smart Inbox that sorts mail into categories, follow-up reminders you set yourself, and AI that composes, summarises and copies your writing style. You still read, decide and reply to everything. Pidgy is not a client. It works on top of the Outlook and Gmail you already use, ranks the five threads that need you out of 147, drafts them in one of four tones, chases the ones that go quiet, groups mail into projects and scores your Inbox Health, hosted in the EU. Pick Spark if you want a cheaper, prettier inbox. Pick Pidgy if you want the inbox worked for you.

What $5.99 buys you with Spark

Spark Premium is one of the best-value email clients around, and the free tier is strong enough that many people never upgrade.

For the price of a coffee a month you get a polished app on every platform you own, Gmail and Outlook alongside any IMAP account, a Smart Inbox that pushes newsletters and notifications out of the way, and follow-up reminders for threads you flag. The AI layer, called My Writing Style, composes and summarises in a voice trained on how you write. It is light, but it is there, and for someone whose inbox is a mild nuisance rather than a daily problem, Spark is a sensible buy.

The quiet catch is that Spark is a client. Using it means moving off your current app on every device, and Spark keeps your email credentials on Readdle's servers to make its sync work. Reviewers also note that the AI tends to go unused, because a client can only offer help at the moment you are already looking at a message.

What Spark leaves for you to do

Spark makes email nicer to look at. It does not decide what needs you, and it does not notice when a thread has stalled unless you flagged it.

Take a Wednesday with 147 new messages. Spark's Smart Inbox files the newsletters and shows you the rest, sorted. You still open each thread, judge whether it matters, write or accept a suggested reply, and remember to set a reminder on the ones you are waiting for. If you forget the reminder on the supplier quote, nothing brings it back.

Pidgy starts a step earlier. It reads both accounts as one inbox, ranks the 147 down to the five that genuinely need a reply, attaches a draft in the tone you chose, and watches the rest. When the supplier quote goes quiet, a chase appears in your drafts, unsent until you click. Everything about that supplier, the quote, the contract, the invoice, is grouped into one project without you filing it, and a single Inbox Health number tells you how the week is going.

Pidgy vs Spark Mail, task by task

The fairest way to read this table is to ask, for each row, if you want help doing the task or want the task done.

When Spark is the right call

Spark wins on price, platforms and polish, and for a lot of people those three are the whole decision.

Budget

You want good email for almost nothing

Free covers most needs and Premium is about $5.99 a month. Pidgy starts with a 7-day free trial and is priced for a different job.

Devices

You switch between a Mac, a phone and a Windows laptop

Spark gives you the same client everywhere. Pidgy is deliberately not a client, so it never competes for that slot. You keep whatever app you like.

Volume

Your inbox is a nuisance, not a problem

If forty emails a day arrive and you clear them comfortably, an agent that ranks, chases and groups is more than you need. Spark's Smart Inbox and light AI will do.

Privacy

Where Pidgy pulls ahead

Spark stores your email credentials on Readdle's servers. Pidgy is EU-hosted, never trains on your mail and never sends without your click. For client-confidential work, that difference can decide it on its own.

Can you run Spark and Pidgy together

In principle, yes. Pidgy attaches to the Outlook or Gmail account rather than to a particular app, so which client you read the mail in is up to you.

That makes the comparison less either-or than it looks. Spark can stay as the app you tap on your phone while Pidgy does the ranking, drafting and chasing underneath. The one thing to weigh is that you would then have two products with access to the account, one holding credentials on Readdle's servers and one processing mail in the EU, and for some people that is one too many.

A short verdict for each reader

Two good products, priced and built for different amounts of email pain.

Go with Pidgy if
  • You want the ranking, drafting and chasing done, not assisted
  • Threads you are waiting on keep dying quietly
  • You would rather keep your current email app
  • Mail must stay in the EU and never train a model
Go with Spark Mail if
  • Free or $5.99 a month is the budget, full stop
  • One app on Mac, iOS, Android and Windows is the priority
  • A Smart Inbox and reminders you set yourself are enough
  • Light AI writing help is all you want from AI

Keep the app you like. Add the agent that does the work.

Questions people ask about Spark and Pidgy

Do I have to stop using Spark to try Pidgy?
No. Pidgy works on the Outlook or Gmail account rather than on an app, so you can keep Spark as your client while Pidgy ranks, drafts and chases underneath.
What does Spark's AI actually do?
Spark's AI composes and summarises messages and can copy your writing style. It helps you write, but it does not rank the inbox, chase stalled threads or group mail into projects.
Will Pidgy chase a follow-up without me setting a reminder?
Yes. Pidgy notices when a thread has gone quiet, writes a chase in the tone you chose and queues it as a draft. It is only sent when you click.
Where does Spark keep my login details?
Spark stores your email credentials on Readdle's servers to power its sync. Pidgy is hosted in the EU and never trains on your mail.
How much cheaper is Spark than Pidgy?
Spark has a strong free tier and Premium at about $5.99 a month. Pidgy has a 7-day free trial with no credit card needed.
Does Pidgy have apps for iOS and Android like Spark?
Pidgy is an agent rather than a client, so it does not replace your email apps. You keep using Outlook or Gmail on your phone and Pidgy works on the account behind them.
